Barn owl

July 16, 2012 by fred 2 Comments

Yesterday, it was not raining. I could not believe it! It turns out to be a nice day. I know a barn owl breeding site. I went to that site hoping to see, and maybe photograph that superb bird. Well I saw it and I photograph it quite well too. That is not the whole story…I almost got court in a stampede!
I was standing near a hedge, about 70 metres away from the site. The breeding site is an old barn. Barn owls have been using that site for years. The bird were hunting and feeding young’s. The problem was that both birds were coming inside the barn opposite from where I was standing. I wanted to go on the other side but that was impossible. Impossible because I was followed by 50 cattle where ever I was going. The cattle were really close to me and Trust me I did not like to be surrounded by those beasts. I was chassed by those cattle all afternoon and at the end I gave up . I wonder if anyone did hear me swearing. I am sure that people living in a five miles radius from where I was standing have heard me!

Catching up

July 8, 2012 by fred Leave a Comment

On this “lovely” day I am catching up on my processing. Here a few more picture of the star bird we had locally. The bird is gone now. How many years will I have to wait to see a Sabine`s gull again….

Spotted flycatcher Take two

July 7, 2012 by fred Leave a Comment

This morning, I went back to see how the spotted flycatcher were doing. The young are growing quickly. I took a few shots. I had to use flash. It was dark as night!
This picture was taking with a 5Dmk2, 24-105 f18 (At 60mm), two flashes, 400 iso, one remote control trigger. I was standing 20 metres away.
These pictures are what I would call “photographers pictures”. Why, because the bird is not prominent in the frame. The bird is a bit lost amongst the traps, but that is what I find interesting…..
Oh I almost forgot! The weather still atrocious….

Sabine`s gull take two

July 5, 2012 by fred Leave a Comment

This morning, I was with the Sabine`s gull for two hours. The light was much better! The bird was really confiding. Sometimes it was flying so close I could not focuson the bird! We are talking about three metres!
Tonight everything is back to normal! The met office is forecasting 8 centimeter of rain for tomorow! Get the boat ready!

Spotted flycatcher

July 3, 2012 by fred Leave a Comment

A game keeper friend of mine told me about a nest of Spotted flycatcher amongst traps! Birds really choose all sort of area to build their nest! I like all those traps. They are very photogenic.
Flycatchers are getting rare in my area. It is a much underrated little brown bird…
Thanks Colin.

Sabine`s gull

July 2, 2012 by fred Leave a Comment

A Sabine`s gull was reported at a lake. The lake is about 15 minutes from my house. Despite the pooooooor weather I had to go. The last time I had seen this species was 25 years ago. It is one of the rare three coloured gull. It is a spectacular bird. I took a few pictures of that rare bird.
