This morning, I was at verulamium lake in St Alban. I wanted to photograph grey heron with nesting material. It is a good spot to do that kind of image. (It`s too late by the way!) On one of the islands they were six heron nest with birds sitting on them. It was nice to watch birds coming and going.
I had been there for four hours when suddenly the R.S.P.B turn up. They placed cameras on the island a month or two ago. They were there with a RSPB trailer. The trailer had television inside. Suddenly they got inside a boat and went to the island. I could not believe my eyes !! All the birds were flushed of their nest. They stayed on the island for 20 minutes. I went to their trailer and said that it was out of order. One of the lady explained to me that they were switching the camera on. I said that this should have been done two weeks ago and that the birds were already sitting on eggs. I also said that they were lucky as If this had been a Schedule One species I would have ringed the police as they were DISTURBING nesting birds. They told me that the birds would be back very quickly….. I stayed there another hour and only one bird came back. I thought that It was appalling behavior from a society who suppose to protect birds….
After I left, I wondered what would have happened if I had been on the island with my camera and the RSPB turned up….
